GLYNN GETS SECOND AT STATE, AGAIN

The Glynn Academy wrestling team recorded a second straight runner-up finish at state duals over the weekend. The Red Terrors reached the title match, but fell tough to Creekview in the championship showdown to finish second in the Class AAAAA state duals. Creekview won the final match of the contest by decision to pull out a 37-33 victory. The Class AAAAA duals were held at Lassiter High in Cobb County on Friday and Saturday. Glynn has now finished second at state duals in back-to-back seasons following a fourth-place finish in 2023. It appeared the Terrors might very well be headed for another meeting with area rival South Effingham as both squads reached the semifinals. But Creekview toppled the Mustangs to reach the final while Glynn advanced to the championship matchup with a 58-15 victory over Jackson County. South Effingham was the two-time defending state champion, having defeated Glynn in last year’s final. Last Monday, the two teams collided in the final at the area duals tournament with the Mustangs notching a narrow win over the Terrors with a win in the last match on the mat that decided the area title. They headed to state duals on the weekend as top contenders and top-5 teams in the polls. South Effingham ended up winning the third-place match this weekend after falling out of the title race. The Terrors cruised into the championship. On Friday, they rolled past Villa Rica 57-6 in the opening round before also rolling over Woodward Academy in the quarterfinals by a 61-12 tally. Next up for the Terrors will be the traditional wrestling portion of the championship season. In traditional wrestling, individual competitors battle to win their own weight classes while accumulating points for their respective teams based on their finishes in their weight classes. The top wrestlers in each weight class from area tournaments will advance to the state tournament. The area meet is set for Feb. 1 at Brunswick High, which also will host a state sectional prior to the state championships being decided at the final tournament site which once again will be Macon. -- Compiled by Kevin Price for GCS Athletics
