GA WRESTLERS GOING FOR STATE DUALS CHAMPIONSHIP
The Glynn Academy wrestling team is set to compete for a state championship this weekend.
The Red Terrors will be in metro Atlanta as they take part in the Class AAAAA Boys Team Dual Wrestling Championship at Lassiter High School.
Glynn qualified for the state tournament Monday when it finished second at the dual meet for Region 1-AAAAA in Augusta. The Terrors fell tough in the final match by two points to South Effingham which came away as the area champion.
The matchup between the Terrors and the Mustangs came down to a 6-5 decision in the final match.
South Effingham is actually the top-ranked team in the state in the coaches poll for Class AAAAA while the Terrors are ranked No. 4. The Mustangs have won back-to-back state duals championships and defeated Glynn in the state final a year ago.
This year’s state meet is scheduled for Friday and Saturday. Glynn and South Effingham would not meet until the state final as long as they were both to keep winning.
The Terrors open with Villa Rica while South Effingham faces Habersham Central in the round of 16.
The winner between GA and Villa Rica would meet the Woodward Academy-Seckinger winner in the next round.
The Brunswick High Pirates finished third at the area duals. Brunswick, ranked third in the state in the coaches poll, fell to Glynn in one of the two semifinals which forced the Pirates into the wrestlebacks. BHS worked its way back to the third-place match where the Pirates defeated Greenbrier.
With the victory there, Brunswick’s veteran coach Tom Bartolotta notched his 500th career victory.
Following this weekend’s state dual meet, the traditional wrestling postseason will begin, starting with area tournaments to decide who advances to state sectionals which are held to set the fields for the final destination in Macon.
If you would like to attend the state duals this weekend at Lassiter, you can get ticket information under the wrestling tab on the Georgia High School Association website (). There, you can also see how to follow live results and watch live video streaming.
