GLYNN TOPS GREENBRIER, STILL ALIVE FOR PLAYOFF SPOT

Glynn Academy pulled out the victory it needed Friday night as the Red Terrors knocked off Greenbrier 28-21 in the crucial Region 1-AAAAA game at Glynn County Stadium.
With the score tied at 21-21 late in the fourth quarter, Glynn junior quarterback Tyree Chisolm ripped off an 85-yard touchdown run to put the Terrors back in front on the scoreboard.
The GA defense then sealed the win with Zion Gervais intercepting a pass inside the Glynn 10-yard line in the final moments.
The Terrors were able to kneel on the ball a couple of times to run out the remaining time as the Wolpack didn’t have any timeouts left to stop the clock.
“The kids played hard, really hard. We showed some grit,” said GA head coach Rocky Hidalgo. “We have played some really good football at times the last few weeks, but we’ve made a lot of mental mistakes. We have to be more mindful for 48 minutes. It’s been a weird year for this team, and I still feel like we’re in the early season with them just because of everything that has gone on.”
The Terrors entered this week knowing they had to win their final two games to be assured of a playoff berth after falling 45-43 last Friday at Effingham in Springfield, where it is always tough for a road team to win.
That was as evident as ever last week, but the Terrors had to put that in the rear-view mirror and focus on this week’s game against Greenbrier.
Now, the Terrors are down to needing one more win next Friday in the final game of the regular-season back at home against Evans, another Augusta-area team.
Glynn is 5-4 overall and 4-3 in the region while Evans also is 5-4 on the season and 3-4 in the region after a 35-31 win over Bradwell Institute on Friday night.
The loss to the Terrors eliminated Greenbrier from playoff contention as the Wolfpack fell to 3-6 on the year and 2-5 in the region.
The Terrors can finish fourth in the final region standings at best with a victory next week and thus would be the No. 4 seed from the league for the Class AAAAA state playoffs. The top three seeds are Brunswick High, which clinched the region crown Friday with its win at Souh Effingham, Lakeside-Evans and Effingham.
“We’ve gotta play well. We haven’t played 48 good minutes yet,” Hidalgo said, looking to next week.
Glynn led Friday’s game 21-7 at halftime after totaling 289 yards in the opening two quarters while holding the Wolfpack to 60 yards of offense.
The Terrors were driving to possibly extend their lead early in the third quarter after forcing a Greenbrier punt to open the second half. But a Glynn fumble on an option-pitch was recovered by a Greenbrier player to end the scoring threat.
Hidalgo said the Terrors missed a block which allowed a free defender to close in on Chisolm who probably shouldn’t have pitched the ball after the play had broken down.
The Wolfpack player picked up the loose ball and returned the fumble deep into GA territory, but after an unsporstmanlike conduct penalty on the play, Greenbrier started at the Glynn 27 yard-line instead of the 12.
It didn’t matter.
The Pack’s quarterback, junior Cole Trupp who normally plays running back, threw a 10-yard pass to running back Beau Polcha for a touchdown that brought the visitors within 21-14 after the extra-point kick.
Greenbrier would score again the next time it got the ball after forcing a Glynn punt, going 45 yards with Trupp scoring from 2 yards to seal the drive. The point-after kick tied the score with 1:21 to go in the third.
Trupp, who is listed at 6-foot-2 and 225 pounds on the Pack team roster, carried on five of six plays called by Greenbrier on the quick march. He started the series with a 39-yard gain to the Glynn 6, but the run was wiped out by a holding call.
When the game went to the fourth quarter, both defenses would force back-to-back punts before Chisolm played the role of hero for the Terrors.
With Glynn starting at its own 18 with 4:47 left, the Terrors lost 3 yards on a first-down pass play. The next call was a quarterback-counter designed for Chisolm to keep the ball in his hands. The junior signal-caller kept going to his left, then hit an open hole and raced to paydirt to give Glynn the lead again.
“He’s as good an athlete as anybody out there,” Hidalgo said of Chisolm who started the year as a wide receiver but became the quarterback in the middle of the season when the starter was dismissed from the team and the second-stringer was lost for the season due to injury.
Chisolm finished the game with 125 yards on 13 carries for Glynn while scoring twice.
Junior running back Da’Sean Howard led a Glynn ground attack that churned out 364 yards as he went for 145 yards on 18 attempts. Sean Wallace also chipped in with 73 yards on only six tries.
The Terrors finished the game with 423 total yards.
Trupp led Greenbrier with 104 yards on 24 attempts. The Pack finished with 190 yards with 136 of that total coming on the ground.
“We didn’t tackle very well (in the second half),” Hidalgo said.
“Their quarterback is a good player, really good player. He’s a big boy.”
Glynn missed a field goal on its first possession of the night after receiving the opening kick, but after Greenbrier went three-and-out, the Terrors needed only two plays to cash in from 56 yards for the opening score.
Howard ran for 2 yards on the first play before he would then take a pitch off the left side and dash 54 yards to the end zone for the touchdown. Tuck Tucker’s point-after made it 7-0.
The Pack responded with a six-play, 57-yard drive to draw even with Elijah Harris scoring from 8 yards. The PAT tied the game late in the opening frame.
Glynn scored twice in the second quarter to open up its 21-7 halftime cushion. Early in the quarter, Chisolm found Wallace for a 33-yard gain on a third-down pass to give Glynn a first down at the Pack 30.
On the next snap, Chisolm threw to tight end Deuce Hidalgo along the GA sideline for another 28-yard pickup to the 2.
From there, Howard would score on the next play to give the Terrors the 14-7 lead after Tucker’s kick.
Glynn extended its advantage to the 14-point margin at the break with an impressive 9-play, 82-yard scoring march that used less than four minutes of clock.
Wallace got the Terrors rolling with a 44-yard gain on the first play. Chisolm would close out the drive with a 12-yard touchdown carry.
