TERRORS FALL SHORT AT EFFINGHAM
By Kevin Price

The Glynn Academy Red Terrors gave a valiant effort Friday night but fell short on the scoreboard as they lost a key Region 1-AAAAA game 45-43 to Effingham in Springfield.
The Terrors had the ball in Effingham territory in the final seconds with a chance to score and pull out a big come-from-behind win on the road, but a lost fumble ended their chances.
With the Rebels (5-4 overall, 5-2 region) holding off the Terrors, they now have the inside track on finishing third in the region and being the No. 3 seed for the state playoffs.
Glynn ( 4-4 overall, 3-3 region) will now play Greenbrier in a league game next Friday at Glynn County Stadium that likely will decide the No. 4 seed for the state playoffs. The Wolfpack also have three region losses.
Brunswick, which is unbeaten in league play, can lock up the region title with a victory in one of its final two league games. Lakeside-Evans, which has lost only to the Pirates in the region, assured itself of at least the No. 2 seed with a rout of Bradwell Institute on Friday night.
In Springfield, the Terrors rallied from a 42-21 deficit early in the third quarter.
A 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback T.Y. Chisolm, a two-point conversion by Deuce Hidalgo and a 28-yard TD run by Da’Sean Howard brought the Terrors within 42-36 with just over three minutes to play in the third period.
A heads-up play by Zion Gervais turned a would-be TD by the Rebels into a touchback when he knocked the ball away from a Effingham player before he crossed the goal line for a touchdown.
That left the score at 42-36 going into the fourth quarter.
The Rebels made the most of a controversial call against Glynn to add a field goal for a 45-36 cushion with 4:36 left to play. A pass that Glynn thought was a forward pass was called a backward pass and Effingham recovered the ball to gain possession and would drive for the field goal and the nine-point advantage.
The Terrors would march from deep in their own territory for a touchdown with freshman quarterback Max Noonan directing the offense on the scoring drive after Chisolm was knocked out of the game on a play that led to a targeting penalty against the Rebels.
Howard broke off a 60-yard run for the Glynn score to get the Terrors within the 45-43 tally with 2:35 to play.
The Terrors then recovered their onside kick to gain possession with a chance to pull off a huge comeback.
Facing a third-and-15, a Noonan deep ball was picked off by the Rebels, but the home team was penalized for pass interference on the play, so Glynn retained possession at the Effingham 30-yard line.
The Terrors advanced the ball to the 20, but with 30 seconds left on the clock, a fumble by Glynn on the next play was recovered by the Rebels who would manage to escape with the victory.
The loss was the fourth in a row for Glynn against the Rebels who won big against the Terrors last season in Springfield.
Effingham entered the game as one of the highest-scoring teams in Class AAAAA as the Rebels were averaging just over 37 points a game.
Effingham’s defense has been shaky from the start of the season, however. The Rebels have given up at least 40 points in all four of their losses. Friday’s game was the first Effingham has won when it has allowed the opponent to score more than 40.
Glynn scored first in Friday’s game on a 16-yard run by Sean Wallace.
The Rebels would tie the game at 7-7 and go ahead 14-7 before a 4-yard run by Chisolm early in the second frame made it a 14-14 game.
Glynn regained the lead on an interception return by Jamir Williams moments later.
But, Effingham would score the final 22 points of the opening half for a 36-14 halftime advantage.
The Rebels extended their cushion to 42-21 just moments in the third quarter before the Terrors mounted their comeback.
