Game Preview
Glynn Academy will go on the road for the second time this season to play at Statesboro Friday night.
The game at Womack Field is a Region 1-AAAAA counter. The Red Terrors won their league opener last Friday at home as they eased past Bradwell Institute. The Blue Devils were beaten soundly at Greenbrier in Augusta.
The Terrors and Blue Devils met in the season opener for both teams last year with Glynn winning the non-region game 21-0 at Glynn County Stadium. That game also marked the debut of Matt Dobson as Statesboro’s head coach.
Dobson would go on to guide the Blue Devils to a 4-8 record last season and a berth in the Class 5A state playoffs. Statesboro defeated Tucker in the first round before losing in round two at Harris County.
The Blue Devils actually have moved up a classification this year with Georgia going from seven classes to six. So, rather than being in the state’s third-largest class as a Class 5A school, Statesboro is now in the second-largest class.
The Terrors trail the all-time series with the Blue Devils 20-13, but Glynn has won the last seven meetings between the teams including the last six with current head coach Rocky Hidalgo at the helm.
Statesboro’s last win in the series was back in 2008 when the Blue Devils won 3-0 at GC Stadium to go to 7-0 on the season. They were ranked second in the state in the Georgia Sportwriters’ rankings at the time and were ranked fourth by the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Blue Devils went on to finish 11-2 that season, reaching the state quarterfinals in Class AAAA.
The last time Glynn and Statesboro met in a region game was 2021. They played each other in the final game of the regular season with the Terrors winning 34-7 at home to secure a state playoff berth.
The Terrors and Blue Devils actually finished tied for fourth in the Region 2-AAAAAA standings with 3-3 records, but Glynn got the fourth seed by virtue of its victory over the Blue Devils.
Statesboro dropped down a classification for the 2022 and 2023 seasons, and the teams kept each other on their schedules for non-region games.
GA also defeated the Blue Devils in the 2022 opener for both teams, 43-42. Glynn converted a two-point play in overtime for the win.
