Game Preview
The Red Terrors will make their home debut in 2024 after winning last Friday at Wayne County.
The opening-game win could easily be described as an ugly one by Glynn which was far less than spectacular on offense against the Yellow Jackets.
But, the two touchdowns scored by senior athlete Greg Peacock, who has been slowed by injury in the preseason after having his junior season cut short by injury, were enough for the Terrors to leave Jesup with a victory.
Wayne didn’t mount much offense, either. The Jackets actually didn’t score an offensive touchdown. Their only touchdown of the night came on a scoop-and-score before halftime by the defense.
Glynn, which converted two-point plays after both of its touchdowns, led 8-7 at halftime. The Jackets kicked a third-quarter field goal to take their first lead, but the Terrors regained the lead on Peacock’s second touchdown late in the third quarter.
The Terrors will be facing an experienced Richmond Hill team this week that returns 19 starters from its 2023 team which finished 5-6 last season.
The Wildcats went 3-2 in their first five games - all non-region games - last season with their losses coming to Ware County and Class AAAAA state champion Coffee which went a perfect 15-0.
Richmond Hill went 1-3 in region action, losing to Camden 35-33 to kick off league play before also falling to Valdosta 24-14. The Wildcats defeated Lowndes 37-14 and fell to region champion Colquitt County 35-3 to round out region action.
The Lowndes win gave the Wildcats the No. 4 seed from their region for the playoffs where they lost to Grayson in round one.
Richmond Hill did not play last week.
Players to watch for the Wildcats include senior quarterback Kirk Scott who passed for 899 yards and eight touchdowns last year while rushing for another 473 yards and two scores.
Senior running back Josh Troupe also returns after rushing for a team-best 799 yards last fall. Senior Caleb Easterling, a starter in the defense backfield, will also get carries for the Wildcats.
Brandon McDonald will be a top target for Scott in the passing game. McDonald, another senior, is a starter in the secondary as well and is being recruited as a defensive back.
The Wildcats are big on both the offensive and defensive lines.
Glynn and Richmond Hill did play in the same region before the Wildcats were put in the state’s largest classification as their school enrollment numbers grew.
The Wildcats won the last meeting between the teams 14-7 back in 2022 when they met in region play.
The previous season, Glynn upset the Wildcats, who were ranked fifth in the state at the time, 7-5 at GC Stadium with one of the best-ever defensive efforts by a Rocky Hidalgo-coached GA team.
The Terrors and Wildcats tied atop the region standings that year with one league loss each, but Glynn was awarded the region title and top playoff seed because of that head-to-head victory.
Matt Lezotte has been head coach at Richmond Hill since 2015, taking over the program there one year after Hidalgo became Glynn’s coach.
