GLYNN GETS WIN AT WAYNE TO OPEN SEASON
Glynn Academy got its 2024 season off to a winning start with a 16-10 victory Friday night over Wayne County in Jesup.
Senior running back-receiver Greg Peacock scored the winning touchdown for Glynn late in the third quarter when he crossed the goal-line from 2 yards out to erase a 10-8 deficit.
A two-point run by Da’Sean Howard gave the Red Terrors a 16-10 lead.
Glynn would make that lead last over the final quarter to leave Jaycee Stadium with the win.
The Terrors and Yellow Jackets were playing for the first time since the 2019 season.
Following a scoreless first quarter, Glynn grabbed the lead just seconds into the second quarter on a 4-yard run by Peacock who didn’t play last week in GA’s scrimmage against Pierce County at Glynn County Stadium.
The Terrors added a two-point conversion by Deuce Hidalgo for an 8-0 lead.
The Jackets scored their only touchdown on a scoop-and-score following a fumble by the Terrors at their own 23-yard line.
The Jackets kicked the extra point to make the score 8-7. That was also the halftime score.
Wayne kicked a field goal from 38 yards early in the third period to take its first lead at 10-8.
The Terrors missed a long field-goal attempt inside the 5-minute mark of the third quarter before Peacock’s second touchdown of the night gave Glynn the lead again going into the final 12 minutes.
Wayne is rebuilding coming into this season after losing a large senior class that included standout running back Matthew Fuller who signed with South Carolina.
The Jackets also lost their head coach last winter when Jaybo Shaw decided to leave the program to take a head coaching job at a South Carolina high school. He was with the Jackets only two seasons.
Wayne will play host to Brunswick High next Friday. The Pirates also lost their opener Friday as they were beaten 51-41 by Camden County in a score-athon at GC Stadium.
Glynn will play at home for the first time in the new season next Friday when the Terrors host Richmond Hill. The Wildcats did not play Friday, so next week’s game will be their opener.
