TERRORS, PIRATES TO COMPETE IN AREA DUALS THIS WEEKEND

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics The 2023-24 wrestling season is about to get serious now. With the arrival of January on the season schedule, it’s time for Brunswick High and Glynn Academy to compete in area and state tournaments. The first one comes up Saturday for the Red Terrors and Pirates as they head to Guyton to compete in the area duals meet being hosted by South Effingham. Glynn will enter the meet as the No. 2 seed behind host South Effingham which is the defending state duals champion in Class AAAAAA. Glynn finished fourth a year ago at state duals. Brunswick, meantime, is the No. 4 seed this weekend. Effingham checks in at No. 3. As for the Pirates, they are 17-9 on the season and are led by returning state champion Anthony Lowe who is 8-0 thus far this season. Other Brunswick wrestlers to watch include Clayton Hicks, a two-time placer in state traditional action, River Creel, who placed in state last winter, and also Stunner Hutchinson, Arick Smith and Thomas Clay. “We are doing well in a rebuilding year,” said Brunswick coach Tom Bartolotta. “We look forward to competing with the best teams in the state here in our region, South Effingham and Glynn Academy. Effingham is also really good this year with new head coach Isiah Royal, a national champion in college.” For Glynn, leading wrestlers are Liam Bee, Hunter Kegley and Cade Morgan. All three individuals took first-place honors in their weight classes last Saturday at a tournament hosted by Brunswick High. GA is coached by Ryan Alfau.
