Glynn Academy head coach Rocky Hidalgo will be buying some steak dinners in the coming days and maybe dessert as well for his defensive team.
With three interception returns for touchdowns before halftime and also a rushing attack that overwhelmed Lakeside-Evans, the Red Terrors walloped the Panthers 50-7 Friday night in the final game of the regular season at Glynn County Stadium.
The final score was posted on the stadium scoreboards at the halftime break in the Region 2-AAAAAA game which included a running clock for the last two quarters under the 30-point mercy rule.
Coach Rock promises his defensive players steak dinners the week after a game in which they get a defensive score. He said since the Terrors got three on Friday, he would likely provide a bonus along with the beef.
“I might get ‘em ice cream,” Hidalgo said, also noting he’s never had a team return three interceptions for scores in a single game.
The first pick-6 by Glynn came from senior cornerback Marshawn Turner who stepped in front of a Lakeside pass inside the Panthers’ 20-yard line and returned the ball along their sideline for the score that gave GA a 29-0 lead early in the second period.
Late in the first half, junior lineman Quay Evans also intercepted a pass inside the Lakeside 20 and returned it for a touchdown which made the score 43-7. Evans also scored on a two-point conversion run following Glynn’s first touchdown.
Moments later, senior linebacker Peyton Parker returned a third interception by the Terrors as he grabbed a batted ball near the line of scrimmage and ran with it along the Lakeside sideline for the score.
Also before halftime, Glynn got scoring runs of 18, 4 and 3 yards from senior tailback Willie Butler who rushed for 159 yards on 20 carries.
Butler’s first TD run came less than two minutes into the game after Glynn kicked off to the Panthers to open the contest but recovered a loose ball following a high and short kick toward the visitor’s sideline that Lakeside failed to field. Bruce Edwards got on the ball to give Glynn the first turnover of the night.
Also in the first half, the Terrors scored on a 31-yard pass from senior quarterback Ryan Schueneman to senior receiver David Price who leaped over a diving defender before going the final few yards for the touchdown.
“We told the kids we wanted to get off the bus tonight and get after them from the get-go,” Hidalgo said. “We wanted them to start thinking about that long bus ride home and stacking shoulder pads and dribbling basketballs. We wanted to make sure we got off to a good start and that’s what we preached to them all week long.”
The Panthers scored their only touchdown after trailing 36-0 on a 16-yard pass which followed a gain of 46 yards on a short completion.
Lakeside’s season came to a close on Friday. The Panthers finish the season with a 3-7 record that includes a 1-5 region ledger. Their only league win came against Grovetown which lost all six of its region games.
But, the Panthers had close losses to rival Evans, South Effingham and Effingham, which wrapped up the region title with a perfect 6-0 record as the Rebels defeated Brunswick High 31-28 Friday at home with a field-goal as time expired.
Glynn ended up solo second in the region as the Terrors went 5-1 in league games, losing only to Effingham in late September. The Terrors finished the regular season with a 8-2 overall record.
Glynn will enter the Class AAAAAA state playoffs next week as the No. 2 seed from the region. The Terrors will play Jonesboro which came away as the No 3 seed from Region 3 with an overtime win over Lovejoy on Friday night.
