GLYNN GETS IT DONE AT EVANS

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Glynn Academy came away with a hard-fought 22-14 victory Friday night over Evans in Region 2-AAAAAA action in Augusta. The win was the fourth in five league games for the Red Terrors (7-2 overall, 4-1 region) who will have an open date next week before closing out the regular season on Nov. 3 with a home game against Lakeside-Evans. The Terrors trailed 7-3 at halftime on Friday night. They took their first lead late in the third quarter on a 12-yard run by senior Willie Butler. Glynn’s score came on a fourth-and-3 play following its own timeout. The extra-point try was no good, so the Terrors settled for the 9-7 cushion which they took into the fourth stanza. In the final quarter, the Terrors extended their lead to 15-7 when Butler picked up a fumble by his quarterback and ran with the ball 95 yards for a touchdown and a 15-7 lead with just less than 10 minutes to play. Glynn would make the most of a failed fake punt by the Knights moments later. Working with a short field, the Terrors gave the ball to Butler who ran 25 yards for his third score of the night and a 22-7 lead with 5:14 left in the game. Evans (3-5, 2-2) would score to pull within 22-14 with a little over four minutes left. The Knights elected to kick deep and rely on its defense to get the ball back. Glynn was able to burn two minutes off the clock before having to punt to the Knights. Tuck Tucker boomed a kick 64 yards to the Evans 9, leaving the home squad deep in its own territory for its last-gasp drive. The Knights quickly moved to midfield and then down to GA’s 31 with about 30 seconds to play. But the Terrors would force a turnover on downs in the closing seconds to get out of Augusta with another win. Last Thursday, the Terrors won at nearby Grovetown by 43-3 as Butler rushed for 300 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. On Friday, Evans running back Rayshaun King gave the home squad a 7-0 lead with a 22-yard TD run on the opening possession. Glynn’s only points before halftime came on a 23-yard field goal by Tucker early in the second quarter.
