TERRORS TAKE DOWN SOUTH EFFINGHAM

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Glynn Academy delivered a winning performance Friday night as the Red Terrors rolled to a 35-0 victory over South Effingham in their annual Homecoming game at Glynn County Stadium. A week after an embarrassing showing at Effingham, the Terrors made easy work of the Mustangs to pick up their second victory in Region 2-AAAAAA. “The kids did a good job. They played hard,” said GA head coach Rocky Hidalgo. “We knew it wouldn’t be anything pretty. Offensively, they kind of make it an ugly game and don’t give you a lot of possessions. “But obviously, defensively we played much better tonight. We had to come out and execute. We had to get some plays out of the quarterback, and (Jayden Ellis) did a nice job throwing the ball around. He was a week better playing quarterback.” The Terrors opened league action two weeks ago with a thrilling 22-15 overtime win over rival Brunswick High, but they suffered a disappointing defeat last Friday in Springfield when the Rebels pounded them 49-3 in the second region games for both squads. Effingham had beaten the Mustangs, their arch-rival, the same night Glynn topped Brunswick. The Rebels blew out the Mustangs by 42-7. On Friday, Glynn (5-2 overall, 2-1 region) jumped out to a 14-0 lead with touchdowns on its first two possessions and was never threatened by the Mustangs (4-2, 0-2) who have now dropped their first two region games. With this latest win over South Effingham, the Terrors have now won nine straight meetings with the Mustangs who last beat Glynn during the 1997 season. The Terrors posted their second shutout of the season as well. Glynn’s first shutout came in the season opener back on Aug. 18 when the Terrors knocked off Statesboro 21-0 at home between the bricks. While blanking the Mustangs, a ball-hawking Glynn defense which surrendered big plays left and right last week at Effingham checked the visitors to only 155 total yards for the game. The Mustangs actually had only gained 20 yards before halftime while attempting one incomplete pass in the first two quarters. South Effingham would pass for 129 yards in the second half while the Terrors stuffed their run game as they allowed the Mustangs only 6 net yards on the ground in the final two periods. The Terrors finished with 383 total yards. They rushed for 279 and passed for 104. Senior tailback Willie Butler led the Terrors’ ground game as he ran for 101 yards and three touchdowns on 20 carries. Butler, now the team’s featured back with Greg Peacock likely sidelined for the rest of the season, gained 80 yards on 13 carries in the opening two quarters. Jayden Ellis, who played quarterback the whole game for Glynn, ran for 71 yards on 13 carries. He also completed 5 of 8 passes for 89 yards and a touchdown. Sean Wallace had three catches that totaled 64 yards for the Terrors. Glynn opened the game with 14-play, 80-yard drive for a touchdown that chewed up almost seven minutes. The Terrors scored on a 25-yard pass from Ellis to senior receiver David Prince in the left corner of the end zone. The Terrors forced South Effingham to punt the first time it had the ball, and Glynn would regain possession at its own 14-yard line. The Terrors mounted another long touchdown drive as they went 86 yards in 10 plays with Zeb Jackson taking a reverse-handoff 34 yards to paydirt. Ellis ran for two points to make it 14-0 as the game went to the second quarter. Glynn extended its lead to 21-0 at the half by going 60 yards in six plays late in the second quarter. Butler scored for the first time on a 1-yard run and Tuck Tucker added the extra-point. After halftime, the Mustangs drove inside the Glynn 20 to start the third period but would surrender the ball on downs. Glynn scored at the outset of the fourth quarter when Butler carried for his second touchdown from 3 yards away to cap a 52-yard drive. Following a missed field goal by South Effingham, Glynn drove 78 yards to score its fifth touchdown of the night with Butler doing the honors again from 4 yards out. Tucker’s extra-point made it 35-0 with just over four minutes left to play. The Terrors will go back on the road next week when they travel to Augusta on Thursday for a league counter at Grovetown. The Warriors lost to Brunswick High last week 42-0 and fell Friday at home to Effingham by 35-32.
