Game Preview: The Red Terrors will look to rebound from a disappointing performance last Friday when they suffered their first loss of the season against Camden County at home.
Glynn (2-1) trailed the Wildcats (2-1) 17-0 at halftime and fell behind 24-0 at the outset of the third quarter.
The Terrors struggled offensively as the offensive line had a tough night against a physical Camden front, but Glynn also hasn’t had the benefit of having its top running back playing at full-strength in a game this season.
Junior tailback Greg Peacock, who has several major-college offers, missed the first game while nursing a lingering shoulder injury. He returned in the second game against McIntosh County Academy but his physical conditioning was a hindrance since he hadn’t practiced.
Peacock also rolled an ankle in that game which limited him last week. The Terrors were hoping he would get better by the day this week and be closer to 100 percent, giving them the ability to get him the ball more as a runner and receiver.
They also hope to have Willie Butler, second on the depth-chart at tailback, back this week. He hasn’t played yet this season due to injury.
Glynn may also utilize its quick passing game more this week. They likely will target senior wideout David Prince even more. Prince had six catches for 100 yards and a touchdown last week. He had a touchdown catch in each of Glynn’s first three games.
The GA defense had only given up one touchdown in the first two games combined, but last week the Terrors allowed six touchdowns by the Wildcats as they gave up several long runs due to poor tackling especially after halftime.
Glynn is playing on the opening day of the Border Classic a second straight year. Last year, the Terrors met Creekside in the second game of the first day’s doubleheader which was greeted by torrential rain.
The game was delayed by almost two hours due to a lightning storm and hard rain. Once the game could start, both teams had to simplify their offenses due to the playing conditions.
The Terrors led 20-7 at halftime, but Creekside scored off two GA turnovers in the third period to take the lead.
Glynn committed three turnovers in the game, but still had a chance to win inside the final two minutes. They ended up losing 21-20 after missing a late field goal.
Baker was victorious last year in this event. The Wildcats stopped Richmond Hill at the goal line as time expired to get out of town with a 35-32 victory in the final game on Saturday night.
Baker got a huge game from senior running back Cam Smith who carried for 244 yards and two touchdowns. He scored on a 52-yard run and an 80-yard run. He also caught a 92-yard scoring pass from Davion Dean.
Dean is back as Baker’s quarterback and is the focal point of the team’s offense this year.
The Wildcats lost their opener two Fridays ago at Bradford by a 12-0 final tally. Bradford also knocked them out of the playoffs last year in the Elite Eight by a 28-17 final score.
Bradford went on to make the semifinals in Class 2s last fall before losing to eventual state champion Cocoa.
Bradford was tough on defense last season and looks to be really strong on that side of the ball again this year. Baker managed only 34 yards rushing and also 34 yards passing in the loss to Tornadoes.
