GLYNN TO FACE CAMDEN FRIDAY AT HOME

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Kickoff A look at Glynn Academy’s next game: Opponent: Camden County When: 7:30 p.m. Friday Where: Glynn County Stadium Radio/Video Stream: 102.5 FM; Records: GA 2-0; CC 1-1 Last week: GA won 14-6 at McIntosh County Academy; CC fell 21-17 at home to Brunswick High Last year/All-time: Camden won 37-7 in Kingsland. Camden leads the all-time series, 18-5. Game Preview: The Red Terrors have won their first two ballgames by scores of 21-0 over Statesboro and 14-6 over McIntosh County Academy. Glynn defeated the Blue Devils at home on Aug. 18 to kick off the 2023 season before pulling out the victory last week over the Bucaneers in Darien. The Terrors will be back at home this week to take on the Wildcats who are coming off a tough 21-17 loss at home to Brunswick High last Friday after opening the season with a hard-fought 23-12 win at home over Columbia in their opening game on Aug. 18. Camden trailed the Eagles 6-0 at halftime in the opener before taking over in the second half. Last week, the Wildcats fell behind the Pirates 14-0 early as Brunswick scored on its first two possessions, and they never led in the game. The Pirates held 21-14 lead at halftime, and a field goal by Camden with just over 8 minutes to play in the fourth quarter was the only score by either side in the second half. Brunswick had a chance to seal the win with just over two minutes left, but fumbled inside the Camden 5-yard line, giving the Wildcats one last chance with the ball. The Brunswick defense preserved the win with an interception just beyond midfield inside a minute to play. It was the second interception of the game for the Pirates whose only turnover was that late fumble. Glynn fell behind 6-0 early last week against the Bucs, but led 7-6 at halftime and scored again in the third period for what turned out to be the last points of the night. The Terrors have allowed only that one score by McIntosh in the first eight quarters of play this season, but the Glynn offense has scored just three touchdowns in the team’s two games. The Terrors scored an offensive touchdown against Statesboro, but also had an interception return for a score and a punt return for a touchdown against the Blue Devils. Glynn also started 2-0 last season when they were beaten soundly by the Wildcats who started the season with losses to Columbia and the Pirates before cracking the win column in the third game of the season against the Terrors. Glynn only has five all-time wins against the Wildcats in 23 games between the teams dating back to the 1982 season when GA won the first meeting between the schools by a 17-13 final score. GA won back-to-back games over Camden under current head coach Rocky Hidalgo in the 2016 and 2017 seasons. The Terrors have never beaten a Camden team coached by Jeff Herron. They lost four games to the Wildcats when he coached them from 2000-2012 and have lost the last two years to Camden with Herron back as head coach a second time. Herron, a 32-year coaching veteran with five state championships including three with the Wildcats, won his 300th game in Georgia when Camden topped Columbia in this year’s opener. His career record is 325-66 which includes a 167-30 record with the Wildcats. Herron is one of only 15 coaches in state history to record 300 or more wins coaching in Georgia.
