Last year/All-time: Glynn won 43-42 in overtime at Womack Field in Statesboro last year in the season opener for both schools. The Blue Devils lead the overall series 20-12.
Game Preview: The Red Terrors will begin the 2023 with a game against Statesboro, a old region opponent which moved down to Class AAAAA prior to last season.
The Terrors won last year’s opener between the teams 43-42 in overtime when they converted a fake field goal for two points after scoring a touchdown on their first possession of the extra fame to answer a score to start the overtime by the Blue Devils who kicked an extra point after their touchdown.
Glynn never led in the game until scoring on the two-point play for the win.
The Terrors raillied from a 28-14 deficit in the second half, tying the game on a 4-yard touchdown grab by David Prince on the final play of regulation. Prince is set for his senior year with the Terrors after committing to Georgia Tech early in the summer.
Greg Peacock, a sophomore running back a year ago, scored Glynn’s touchdown in overtime. He had three earlier rushing touchdowns in the game. Peacock is set for his junior season and already has several scholarship offers from Power 5 programs with two years still to play in high school.
The Terrors have won the last six meetings with the Blue Devils including all five games they have played against Statesboro with Rocky Hidalgo as their coach. Hidalgo is going into his 10th season at the Glynn helm.
The Terrors are 5-3-1 in season-opening games under Hidalgo. This will be the team’s first season opener at home since 2020 when Glynn defeated McIntosh County Academy 33-7 at Glynn County Stadium The Terrors will face the Buccaneers next Friday in Darien.
Friday’s game will be the debut for Matt Dobson as Statesboro’s head coach. He is replacing former head coach Jeff Kaiser who retired following the Blue Devils’ 3-8 season last year.
Dobson played college football at Georgia Southern in Statesboro. He was previously the offensive coordinator at West Forsyth.
Last year, the Blue Devils got a huge game from senior running back Jordan Lovett who carried for 277 yards and three touchdowns in the loss to Glynn. Lovett has graduated, so the Terrors won’t have to worry about stopping him in Statesboro’s new spread offense.
They will have to defend senior Kam Mikell who missed last year’s opener due to injury. Mikell, a four-star prospect, as an athlete, was Statesboro’s quarterback but will play wide receiver this season for the Blue Devils. Mikell has played tailback, receiver and quarterback for the Blue Devils in his first three seasons, but many consider his future to be in the defensive secondary.
Mikell, who is 6-foot and 180 pounds, is a standout on the track for Statesboro, but also starts at guard for the basketball team. He is being heavily recruited by Kirby Smart and the Georgia Bulldogs, but has official visits this fall scheduled with Colorado, Kentucky, Tennessee and Texas A&M.
A young Statesboro defense is being led early by its linebackers.
