GLYNN FALLS IN LOW-SCORING GAME TO NORTHSIDE WR

By Kevin Price For GCS Athletics Glynn Academy lost its first-round game in the Class AAAAAA state playoffs Friday night as the Red Terrors fell 18-13 to Northside (Warner Robins) at McConnell-Talbert Stadium in Warner Robins. With the loss, the Red Terrors finish the season 6-5. The Eagles are now 7-5 and move on to take on Marist in the second round next week. Glynn was the No. 3 seed from Region 2-AAAAAA while the Eagles were the No. 2 seed from Region 1. They were one of three teams from their region that finished 3-2 in league games, but Northside earned the second seed through the tiebreaker rules used by the league. By toppling the Terrors, Northside helped its region to a sweep of the four playoff games against its opponents from Region 2. Houston County, the league’s No. 4 seed and the state’s 10th-ranked team, knocked off Region 2 champion and top seed Brunswick 29-28 while Lee County, the No. 3 seed from Region 1 and the state’s 9th-ranked team routed Effingham 57-7. The Rebels were the Region 2 runners-up. Also, Evans fell to Region 1 champion Thomas County Central by 49-10. The Terrors went into their game at Northside on the strength of four straight wins to close out the regular season while earning their ninth consecutive postseason appearance in as many seasons under head coach Rocky Hidalgo. Glynn trailed Northside just 8-6 at halftime. The Eagles scored first and added a two-point conversion. Glynn’s score came with 8:30 to play in the second quarter when senior quarterback Tyler Devlin hooked up with junior receiver David Prince for a 92-yard touchdown pass. Glynn’s two-point try was unsuccessful. The Terrors reached for a 46-yard field goal in the final seconds of the opening half that was off the mark. Northside stretched its lead to 15-6 in the third quarter on a 31-yard touchdown run by Da’veon Latimore with 4:50 left in the period. Glynn misfired on a field-goal attempt from a closer distance than the earlier try late in the third. Just seconds into the fourth, Ashton Paredes booted a 46-yard field goal that extended the Eagles’ advantage to 18-6. The Terrors quickly pulled closer when Devlin ran 48 yards for a touchdown on Glynn’s next offensive series. The scoreboard blinked to 18-13 following the extra-point kick. That was the final score of the ballgame, however. The Terrors have now lost three times to the Eagles in the playoffs under Hidalgo with two of those setbacks coming in the state quarterfinals. Northside went on to win the state title in 2014 when the Eagles ended a surprising playoff run by Hidalgo’s first Glynn team. Glynn is now 7-2 in first-round games under Coach Rock. Last year, the Terrors lost at Hughes which played Buford for the state championship. Hughes came into this season ranked No. 1 and is now four wins away from its first state title and a perfect 15-0 season after winning its playoff opener on Friday.
