Glynn Academy won its third straight game Friday night, pulling out a 25-22 come-from-behind victory over Evans at Glynn County Stadium in a key Region 2-AAAAAA game.
A 43-yard field goal by senior Kody Arnold with 34 seconds left to play lifted Glynn to the win on Senior Night as the Red Terrors were playing their final game of the regular season at home.
The Terrors, now 5-4 overall and 3-2 region, trailed 22-8 early in the third quarter after the Knights scored a touchdown on their first offensive play of the second half. But Glynn scored the final 17 points of the game while securing a playoff berth for the 14th consecutive season and the ninth in as many seasons under head coach Rocky Hidalgo.
“The kids were tough-minded, mentally-tough,” Hidalgo said of the comeback by his team. “They fought their tails off.”
A month ago, the Terrors were reeling, having lost four straight for the first time under Hidalgo after starting out the season with back-to-back wins. Glynn was 0-2 in the region after falling to Brunswick High and Effingham, the top two teams in the league standings, in its first two region games.
But the Terrors started their current streak with a 13-9 win at South Effingham before winning at home the last two weeks, knocking off Grovetown 46-13 last Friday night in the school’s annual Homecoming contest and then toppling the Knights (3-5, 1-3) between the bricks this week.
Glynn can now finish no lower than third in the region. The Terrors are off next week before closing out the season on Nov. 4 at Lakeside-Evans.
On Friday night, sophomore Greg Peacock had another monster game for the Terrors. The sophomore running back rushed for 233 yards on 37 carries and scored the tying touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 2-yard run. His rushing total ranks as one of the best single-game marks in GA football history.
“That ball ain’t heavy,” Hidalgo said of the workhorse-effort by Peacock. “I didn’t count his carries. He wants the ball. He never came over and said we were giving it to him too much. That’s what tailbacks do. They want the football. And, that’s what you do. You give him the ball.”
The Terrors took the game’s first lead as they scored a touchdown on the opening drive of the game. Peacock returned the opening kick 49 yards to the Evans 41-yard line for good starting field-position. Last week, Peacock returned the game’s opening kick 99 yards for a touchdown and later returned another kick 96 yards for a score.
Glynn marched the 41 yards in eight plays and scored on a 1-yard run by senior quarterback Tyler Devlin. The Terrors converted a two-point play with Ryan Scheuneman scoring on a rush to make it 8-0 less than five minutes into the game.
The Knights answered on their first possession, driving 80 yards in nine plays for a touchdown. Junior running back Rayshaun King scored on a 14-yard run, but a two-point conversion run by quarterback DJ Walton failed, so Glynn kept an 8-6 lead.
Glynn lost a fumble on its second possession inside the Knights’ territory. Evans didn’t capitalize on the turnover, but the Knights did score in the second quarter for a 15-8 halftime advantage.
King scored his second TD for Evans on a 37-yard run, slipping a tackle in the open field and racing into the end zone for the go-ahead score. Walton did convert a two-point run this time for the 7-point lead.
Coming out of the halftime break, Evans got the ball to start the third quarter after winning the coin toss and deferring to the second half. The Knights handed off to King on their first snap after starting at their own 20 following a touchback on the kickoff. King broke free off the right side of the line and ran 80 yards along the GA sideline to give the visitors a 22-8 lead following another conversion run by Walton.
Hidalgo said the Terrors failed to surround the runner like they should have on King’s TD run to start the second half. It was something they discussed at halftime.
“We had to fit and tackle better on defense,” Hidalgo said. “We misfit on the ball there and tried to fix that and play some football. The kids did a better job after that.”
King finished the night with the three scores and 191 yards on 13 carries. After his opening carry of the third period, he only ran the ball three more times, twice gaining no yards and losing a yard on his last carry.
Meantime, Peacock, who had 98 yards on 14 attempts in the first half, was just getting warmed up. The sophomore did lose a fumble on Glynn’s second series in the third quarter in Effingham territory.
But after the GA defense forced a three-and-out, Glynn went 66 yards in nine plays for its second touchdown with Peacock, Noonan and Devlin all carrying the ball. But, it was Jayden Ellis who scored from 16 yards out on a reverse handoff on third-and-9 to pull Glynn within 22-15 with just over a minute to play in the third after Arnold’s PAT kick.
Following a stop by the Glynn defense that forced a punt early in the fourth, GA started what ended up being its game-tying drive from its own 43. Glynn lost 5 yards and also got called for holding on first down, putting them back on the 28. Needing 25 yards to move the chains, a second-down pass fell incomplete. Now, in third-and-long, Devlin drilled a ball over the middle to Peacock who made an over-the-head catch and fell to the turf after hauling in the pass for a huge 28-yard gain to the Evans 44 to keep the series alive.
From there, Peacock carried for 26 yards including the final 2 for the touchdown with 7:05 left. Arnold made the extra-point to draw Glynn even at 22-22.
On their ensuing possession which started at the 20 following another touchback, the Knights did pick up a first down, but they would gain only 2 yards over their next three plays and were forced to punt.
A 47-yard kick left Glynn to start at its own 20. The following is a play-by-play of the Terrors’ game-winning drive:

Following Arnold’s kick, Evans did get just inside GA territory before time ran out.
For Evans, Walton finished 9-of-14 passing for 99 yards to go with 85 yards rushing on 13 carries. He did throw an interception when pressured into an ill-advised pass late in the first half deep in Glynn territory that was picked off by Ryan Young to keep it a one-score game at the break.
Prior to the game, the Terrors honored the senior players along with the cheerleaders.
