TERRORS WIN BIG ON HOMECOMING NIGHT

Looking better than they have all season, the Glynn Academy Red Terrors rolled to a 46-13 rout of Grovetown Friday night in their annual Homecoming game at Glynn County Stadium.
The Region 2-AAAAAA victory moved Glynn to 4-4 overall and 2-2 in the region as the Terrors are hoping to make a late season push toward a ninth straight playoff berth.
GA head coach Rocky Hidalgo said the Terrors put together their most complete performance of the season Friday against the Warriors.
“We made plays in all facets of the game,” Hidalgo said. “I felt like this was a good week. We had a good week of practice, felt like we improved.”
Glynn has now won back-to-back games for the second this season. The Terrors opened the season with wins over Statesboro and McIntosh County Academy before losing four in a row including their first two league games. Last week, the Terrors notched their first region win at South Effingham.
The star in Friday’s game for the Terrors was sophomore Greg Peacock. He opened the game by taking the kickoff 99 yards to the end zone for a touchdown.
That was the biggest play of the night for the Terrors, but big plays continued for Glynn. And, Peacock made some more, too.
The GA running back would take another kickoff in the second quarter 96 yards for a touchdown.
Peacock also caught a 21-yard touchdown pass from senior quarterback Tyler Devlin for Glynn’s second score in the first quarter.
On that play, Peacock took a handoff from Devlin. Peacock then tossed the ball to Jayden Ellis who was lined up as a receiver on the right side of the line as he ran right. Ellis, running back toward Devlin, tossed the ball back to the GA quarterback who then lofted the pass to Peacock along the Grovetown sideline as he was left uncovered coming out of the backfield.
Peacock carried for 97 yards on 22 carries to lead Glynn’s 162-yard rushing effort.
“Pretty impressive,” Hidalgo said of Peacock’s game.
The GA coach said he felt like the Terrors could return a kickoff for a touchdown after watching game film of the Warriors (3-4, 0-4).
“He took off on that first one,” Hidalgo said. “There was no hesitation. When he caught it and hit about the (10-yard line), I knew we had blocked it up and it had opened up. If the kicker didn’t get him, he was gone. It was kind of the same way on the second one. He did a nice job catching the ball and rolling with it, but the kids did a good job of hatting it up also.”
Hidalgo said he promised the players on the kick return team steak dinners if Glynn returned a kickoff for a touchdown.
“Good question,” the coach said when asked what he promised for two kick returns for touchdowns. “I’ll have to get them some good dessert or something.”
The Terrors finished with 266 total yards which included 104 yards passing.
Devlin threw for four touchdowns as he completed 6 of 10 passes with one interception and a dropped pass that could have been a touchdown. He threw two TD passes to junior receiver David Prince. Those covered 27 and 28 yards. The second one, which was Glynn’s final score in the fourth quarter, was the 28-yarder. Prince caught the ball over his shoulder as he crossed the goal line.
Devlin also hooked up with starting running back Hank Noonan, his buddy from the GA baseball team, for a 16-yard score on third down in the opening quarter.
The Terrors led 19-0 after the first quarter. They put their first two touchdowns on the scoreboard in the game’s first five minutes. Following the kick return by Peacock for the opening touchdown, Glynn blocked a punt for the second straight week. And again, it was Daniel Smiley who blocked Grovetown’s kick after a three-and-out on its first offensive series.
Smiley blocked a punt last Friday at South Effingham with Glynn picking up the loose ball for a touchdown. This week, GA got the ball at the Grovetown 24-yard line following Smiley’s block which set up Devlin’s first TD pass to Peacock.
The Warriors got on the board on a 46-yard pass play midway through the second quarter, but Peacock returned the ensuing kick for another touchdown to make it 26-7.
Glynn’s Jayden Ellis intercepted a pass on the Warriors’ next series and returned it 28 yards to the 2, setting up a keeper for a touchdown by Devlin on first-and-goal for the Terrors as the scoreboard blinked to 33-7.
The Terrors went up 40-7 with 1:45 to go in the first half on Devlin’s first TD pass to Prince. The touchdown followed another GA interception by Ryan Young which gave the Terrors the ball at the Grovetown 46.
The Warriors scored on a 32-yard pass with just over a minute remaining in the half to make for the 40-13 score at intermission.
For the Warriors, their quarterback Amare Clark ran for 89 yards on 21 carries while throwing for 153 yards and the two scores.
“He’s a dude,” Hidalgo said of their 183-pound junior quarterback who has now thrown for more than 1,000 yards on the season. “We did a good job of keeping him hemmed up.”
The Terrors will be back at home next Friday for a region game against Evans.
On Friday, the Terrors wore black uniforms in memory of former Glynn baseball and football coach Bob Black who passed away after a courageous fight against cancer this past spring.
Also on Friday night, GA senior offensive lineman Eddren Jackson was named the Homecoming King during the halftime ceremony. Jackson, who wears No. 70 for the Terrors, presented the crown and sash he received as the king to Glynn special needs students Jack and Oran Yeargan who also were part of the Homecoming court.
“Great kid,” Hidalgo said. “There’s a reason he won the king.”
