The Glynn Academy Red Terrors ended a four-game losing streak Friday night with a 13-9 win at South Effingham in a Region 2-AAAAAA meeting.
The victory was the 8th in a row for the Terrors over the Mustangs who have not beaten Glynn since winning the first two games ever played between the two teams.
This win was a much-needed one for the Terrors, too. They started the season with back-to-back wins over Statesboro and McIntosh County Academy before dropping their next four games including their first two league games to rival Brunswick and Effingham.
The Terrors had never lost four straight games under head coach Rocky Hidalgo who has been the team’s coach since the 2014 season. He has taken them to the playoffs in each of his first eight seasons and hopes to take the Terrors back to the postseason again this fall in his ninth season with the program.
Now 3-4 overall and 1-2 in league games, the Terrors still have that chance with three region games to go to close out the season schedule. They will be at home this coming Friday against Grovetown in the school’s annual Homecoming game.
Friday’s loss dropped South Effingham to 2-3 overall and 0-2 in the region. They lost to Effingham to open region play two weeks ago.
Glynn scored first in Friday’s game. Daniel Smiley blocked a punt by the Mustangs and Jayden Ellis recovered the loose ball for a touchdown. The extra-point kick made it 7-0 with 8:19 to play in the opening quarter.
South Effingham forged a 7-7 tie early in the second period on a 48-yard TD run by Justin Martell which was followed by a successful extra-point kick.
The Terrors regained the lead with 1:21 to play in the second quarter on a 36-yard field goal by Kody Arnold.
Arnold would also kick a 48-yard field goal for Glynn in the closing seconds before halftime that gave the Terrors a 13-7 advantage at intermission.
The score was still 13-7 after a scoreless third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, Glynn intentionally gave up a late safety with 1:23 left in the game.
Now up 13-9, they kicked the ball to the Mustangs who got one last shot with the ball. The GA defense came through with the stop to finish out the game for the Terrors.
Glynn had given up 86 points in its first two region games, allowing 55 to Brunswick and 31 to Effingham. South Effingham came into Friday’s game averaging 21.5 points.
