GA FACES SOUTH EFFY LOOKING TO STOP SLIDE

A look at Glynn Academy’s next game:
Opponent: South Effingham
When: 7:30 p.m. Friday
Where: The Corral, Guyton
Radio: 102.5 FM
Records: GA 2-4 overall, 0-2 Region 2-AAAAAA; SE 2-2, 0-1
Last year/All-time: GA won 38-0; Glynn leads 7-2
Game Preview: The Red Terrors will take on South Effingham as they look to end their four-game losing slide since starting out 2-0 with victories over Statesboro and McIntosh County Academy to open the season.
The four-game losing streak started with a 37-7 loss at Camden County. Glynn lost the next week 21-20 in the Border Classic to Creekside (Fla.), and after an off week, dropped its first two region games to Brunswick by 55-21 and Effingham 31-14.
This is the first time the Terrors have ever lost four games in a row under head coach Rocky Hidalgo who has been with the program since the 2014 season, taking the team to the state playoffs in each of his eight previous seasons and winning at least one game in the postseason every year until last year when Glynn fell to state finalist Hughes in the opening round.
The Terrors will need to finish strong over the final four games to keep their playoff streak alive in 2022. The top four finishers in the region standings qualify for the state playoffs.
Look for Glynn to get the ball in the hands of sophomore running back Greg Peacock more often starting Friday night.
The Terrors also have to cut down on turnovers which have killed them during this losing skid.
The Glynn defense also has been vulnerable to chunk-yardage plays, especially last week against Effingham when poor tackling led to numerous big gains for the Rebels who rolled up 441 yards.
The previous week, the Pirates picked up 471 yards including 281 on the ground for their best offensive output to that point.
South Effingham did not play last week as its non-region game against Screven County was canceled as Hurricane Ian threatened the area. The Mustangs faced rival Effingham the previous week in their region opener and lost 29-3 to the Rebels in Springfield.
The Mustangs are scoring 21.5 points a game and are giving up 12.5.
They lost their season opener 21-14 at Vidalia but bounced back to deck both Islands (24-0) and Bradwell Institute (45-0) before losing to Effingham.
The Terrors have won seven in a row over the Mustangs since losing the first two games ever played between the teams. Glynn has outscored South Effingham 73-3 in the last two games combined.
Surprisingly, Glynn’s 2015 team which went on to play for a state championship only defeated the Mustangs 21-14 in Guyton in the final game of the regular season that year. Glynn went into that game ranked 10th in the state.
The Mustangs finished 7-4 that season after making the state playoffs as the No. 4 seed from the region and losing to fourth-ranked Houston County in the first round.
