Game Preview
Glynn Academy and Effingham are set to meet in a key Region 1-AAAAA game Friday night in Brunswick.
With two weeks left in the regular season, both teams are in the mix for playoff spots from the region. Brunswick (6-1), Effingham (5-1) and Statesboro (5-1) are all tied for first in the loss column with one league loss each. Glynn (4-2) and South Effingham (4-2) both have two losses in league action.
Right now, Bradwell Institute (2-4) has four losses and the Tigers are on the outside of the playoff picture unless they win both of their final two league games and both Glynn and South Effingham lose their final two games. That would create a three-way tie for the fourth spot which would need to be broken through the region tiebreakers.
A victory for the Terrors over the Rebels on Friday would give Glynn a chance to finish second in the region and get a home game in the first round of the Class AAAAA state playoffs. The Terrors also would have to win next Friday at Greenbrier to close out the league schedule with two losses.
That could leave them tied with both Statesboro and Effingham who play next week if the Rebels were to knock off the Blue Devils. Glynn would win the tiebreaker with head-to-head wins over both teams if they were to be tied with either of those teams at the end of the season.
Effingham still has a shot to win the region, but the Rebels first have to beat both Glynn and Statesboro next week for that to happen. They also would need Brunswick to lose its final game next week at home against South Effingham. The Pirates defeated the Rebels when the teams met to kick off region play, so Brunswick would get the region’s top seed if those two teams ended up tied atop the league standings.
Statesboro actually controls its own destiny going into this week. The Blue Devils play South Effingham, and a victory over the Mustangs would give them the chance to go into the game next week against Effingham with a chance to claim the region championship.
Glynn was off last week, giving the Terrors two weeks to prepare for the matchup with the Rebels. Effingham played last week, defeating Greenbrier 42-17 at home.
The Rebels have won five in a row in the region since dropping their game against Brunswick, 42-14. Effingham has scored 36 points or more in all five games. Its closest game during the winning streak was a 43-35 triumph over Bradwell Institute at home the week after losing to the Pirates.
Effingham’s only other lossthis season was a 56-42 defeat against Houston County at home in the season opener. The Bears are currently 8-0 on the season and are ranked fourth in the state. They are playing Thomas County Central Friday night in a Region 2-AAAAA matchup between a pair of top-5 teams with eyes on the region crown.
Effingham senior quarterback Tucker Perkins has thrown for 1,011 yards and 12 touchdowns with three interceptions.
On the ground, junior Jmere Doe-Davis averages almost 92 yards a game for the Rebels while senior Jr Mckenzie averages almost 75 yards rushing a game.
Junior Trayvis Hunter is the team’s leading receiver with 36 catches for 465 yards and six touchdowns. He is the younger brother of Travis Hunter, last year’s Heisman trophy winner who now plays for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Glynn’s offense is led by sophomore quarterback Max Noonan and senior halfbacks Da’Sean Howard and DJ Creighton.
Against South Effingham, Noonan led the Terrors with 171 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Howard and Creighton combined for another 101 yards on the ground for Glynn.
Ringleaders for the Glynn defense include linebackers Smith Whitehead and Cooper Reiss.
