Glynn Academy grinded out another Region 1-AAAAA victory Friday night, knocking off South Effingham 28-2 at Glynn County Stadium.
With a 355-yard rushing effort led by sophomore quarterback Max Noonan, the Red Terrors led from start to finish against the Mustangs in a game played in front of a sparse crowd and between intermittent rain showers.
Glynn led 14-2 at halftime and added another pair of touchdowns in the second half in one of the quickest games in recent memory between the bricks for a game that didn’t include a running clock.
The victory was the second in a row for the Terrors who ran their record to 5-3 overall and 4-2 in the region with two games left on the season schedule.
Glynn has now beaten South Effingham in 11 straight games dating back to the 1990s when the teams first played. The Mustangs fell to 3-4 and 3-2 in the region with this latest loss to the Terrors.
This win wasn’t the prettiest for the Terrors, however, according to head coach Rocky Hidalgo who said Glynn didn’t have a good week of practice leading into Friday’s game.
“We played like we practiced, especially in the first half. We were all over the place,” Hidalgo said. “We made a lot of mistakes tonight. As a whole, there were a lot of things we could have done better.”
The Terrors started out well, going 58 yards in nine plays on the game’s opening possession to grab a quick 7-0 lead. Ian Pomiewchowski scored from 12 yards out on a rushing play to cap the drive. Patrick Coyle added the extra-point kick for the 7-0 lead.
Glynn scored its second touchdown with 7:37 to play in the second quarter on an 86-yard keeper by Noonan for a 14-2 lead.
Between their two scores, the Terrors lost the ball on a mishandled punt inside South Effingham territory, giving the ball right back to the Mustangs when they could have inherited good starting field position.
The Terrors also surrendered the safety when their punter went to a knee in the end zone when fielding a snap before getting off a kick.
In the third quarter, Glynn went up 21-2 with a six-play, 62-yard drive on its first possession of the second half after forcing a punt by the Mustangs. Noonan went for 42 yards and his second score on a simple quarterback keeper on third-and-1 with 4:51 to play in the third.
The next time Glynn got the ball late in the third, the Terrors marched 63 yards in 11 plays with Noonan keeping again for a 1-yard score with the game now in the fourth quarter. Coyle added the point-after to put the final 28-2 tally on the scoreboard with eight minutes left to play.
For the night, Noonan carried 11 times for 171 yards to lead the Terrors on the ground. DJ Creighton added 56 yards on 11 carries and De’Sean Howard carried for 45 yards on eight attempts.
Glynn attempted only one pass on the night with Noonan completing that to TJ Chisolm for 27 yards to the South Effingham 11-yard line on that last scoring drive in the final quarter.
The GA defense held the Mustangs to only 98 total net yards for the game with all but 3 of those yards coming on the ground.
Kyran White, a junior running back for South Effingham, carried 20 times for 76 yards. White ran for 236 yards last week in an overtime win over Greenbrier.
Smith Whitehead recovered a fumble in the first half for the Glynn defense.
The Terrors have a open date this coming week. They return to action on Oct. 24 against Effingham. The key region game against the Rebels will be at home.
“Our focus has to be good the next two weeks. We’ve gotta have two great weeks of practice with a good team on the horizon and a chance to have a home playoff game,” Hidalgo said.
